Yeast Infection Causes Part 1

There are a number of yeast infection causes and certain precautions should be taken for anybody, especially those who may have had multiple yeast infections in the past.

  • Clothing: Clothing that traps heat and moisture can lead to yeast infections. This is because yeast thrive in warm, moist environments.Fabrics like leather and polyester should be avoided in the vaginal area. Stick to breathable, white cotton underwear and be sure to change them at least once a day. It may be necessary to change them more often during an actual yeast infection, but always change underwear at the first sign of moistness. Yeast will multiply very quickly if the environment is too warm and moist for a long enough period of time and it’s possible a yeast infection could develop.
  • Chemicals: Anything that contains perfumes or dyes can upset the ph balance in the vagina. When the ph balance is disturbed, yeast infections are likely to develop. Avoid spraying perfumes or body sprays anywhere near the vagina and when they are used, use a little, very sparingly. It’s also important to avoid douching. It has no known benefits and it is a popular cause of yeast infections. Laundry detergents, softeners, scented tampons, scented bubble baths and even toilet paper can contain additives that interfere with the ph balance of the vagina.
  • Condoms: Condoms that are lubricated with nonoxynol-9 can cause yeast infections, bladder infections and rashes. Those who are allergic to latex (which is fairly uncommon) may also be at an increased risk.If possible, use other types of barrier-style birth control methods or avoid those containing nonoxynol-9.
  • Antibiotics: Medications used to treat various infections may kill the bacteria causing the ailment, but they may also be killing the good bacteria in the body, which can cause other problems – like yeast infections. Some women report getting yeast infections when taking certain antibiotics and some women report getting one when using any antibiotic. This is why natural yeast infection remedies are the best cures.
  • Hormones: You may have heard that women who are pregnant are more prone to yeast infections. This is because their hormones are fluctuating so much. The same is true for women who take oral contraceptives. When hormones fluctuate a lot, yeast infections can occur. Although yeast do generally dislike the ph of menstrual blood, a mild yeast infection can appear to go away during menstruation and then reappear after menstruation has ended.

As you can see, there are a number of yeast infection causes and all but one of these listed causes can be preventable (those that occur during pregnancy) by taking precaution and avoiding certain types of products.
